Masters of Potter Administration FAQ
Presenters :: Schedule
What is it?
On Monday, July 20, we will be offering a special one-day program track focused on the impact of the Harry Potter phenomenon on business and law; this track will take place off-site at ZEUM. The special registration for the MPA includes breakfast Monday morning with a presentation by Susan Gunelius, author of Harry Potter: the Story of a Global Business Phenomenon, lunch with special guests, and a networking reception at the end of the day's program.
What's the cost?
Because of the nature of this programming, you must obtain an add-on registration if you wish to attend multiple sessions. The MPA will cost $130 without a registration, $100 with a regular registration, and $75 for Merlin Circle sponsors.
All full- and Merlin's Circle-registrants will receive a ticket to one morning session or one afternoon breakout session, but if you wish to attend additional MPA sessions, you need to purchase the add-on MPA registration.
Don't forget - the MPA registration includes breakfast, lunch and a special networking reception.
Monique Trottier, formerly of Raincoast Books and currently an owner and partner of Boxcar Marketing, will be Azkatraz's MPA Mistress of Ceremonies.
Susan Gunelius, author of Harry Potter: the Story of a Global Business Phenomenon, will be our breakfast speaker, and will also speak at a breakout session in the afternoon.
Lev Grossman, TIME Magazine's book editor and tech writer, will be speaking about the future of publishing.
Robin Burgener and Tanis Solar of the 20Q Harry Potter object, website, company, and phenomenon will be speaking about the 20Q Project and the Harry Potter Snitch version.
Aaron Schwabach and Julie Cromer-Young of Thomas Jefferson School of Law will discuss legal HP- and fan-creativity issues, including the RDR case.
Fred von Lohmann, Senior Staff Attorney at the EFF, will present on protecting
user-generated (especially fan-generated) content.
Elizabeth Bland, Exhibition Coordinator at the National Library of Medicine, will speak about curating a Harry Potter-themed exhibition.
Denise Paolucci & Mark Smith, founders of Dreamwidth, will discuss the impact of social networking on fandom, and the impact of fandom on social networking.
Henry Jenkins, who is transitioning between MIT and USC, will speak about bringing participatory culture into the classroom.
More guests will be announced shortly!
Where will the MPA programming take place?
The breakfast and the networking reception will be at the Parc55 Hotel - but all MPA programming sessions will be at ZEUM, a multimedia and technology museum located at 221 Fourth Street. It's only a few blocks from the hotel; please contact info @ hp2009.org (without the spaces) if you are not able to traverse the distance on your own and we will arrange transportation for you.
How can I register for only the MPA programming track?
Click the REGISTRATION button above and select the Masters of Potter Administration option; you will have an opportunity to add on events like Friday's Wrock Around the Rock cruise around San Francisco Bay, the Sunday night Prison Break ball, and other options. Basically, the MPA-only registration is treated like a single-day registration.
How can I add an MPA track registration to my Full or Merlin's Circle registration?
Click on the REGISTRATION button above and add the Masters of Potter Administration option to your registration. You can add it to your registration at Azkatraz, as well, and pay at the Registration Desk.
Are there any special discounts?
Merlin's Circle registrants get $55 off an MPA registration and full registrants get $30 off an MPA registration.
I looked at the schedule below and wow, that's a lot of legal topics! Do I have to be a lawyer to attend?
No, some of the programming covers issues of interest to website operators, creative fans like ficcers, filkers and vidders, and those who remember the Stouffer case back in 2000.
But if I am a lawyer, can I get CLE credits?
We have applied to the California Bar for status as a CLE provider. We won't know until late June if our application has been granted, but if for some reason our application is denied, as the Bar's website says, "an individual attorney can submit a Member Credit Request Form to request MCLE credit for his or her individual attendance at an education activity." But for lawyers, the MPA at Azkatraz has the potential to provide five to six CLE credits in interesting sessions, plus breakfast, lunch and a cocktail reception, all for $130.
Sure! The PDF of all programming at ZEUM is available here; the list of programming sessions is as follows:
8:00 - 9:00
Breakfast with Susan Gunelius
Susan Gunelius, author of Harry Potter: the Story of a Global Business Phenomenon, will speak at our breakfast at ZEUM; afterwards, we will all walk to ZEUM together. It's a half a mile, and you can see the route via Googlemaps here.
9:30 - 10:30
Social Networking, Fandom and Web 2.0
Do you remember the days of Usenet? Or when it was a shocking thing to set up a Yahoogroup to host your own fics? When you could set up a Geocities site or an EZBoard in a few hours to list or discuss your fic recs? Whether you do or you don't, you're invited to this panel where we remember the past and look to the future of the web, social networking and interactivity. What will the impact of the Kindle be on fic? How has YouTube changed fanvids? How can you use Zazzle to make a statement about a show or film? And do fans want or need a fandom-friendly space for their creative expression? Presenters include Mark Smith, Denise Paolucci, Melissa Anelli, Lori Sammey - moderated by Henry Jenkins
10:30 - 11:30
Fair Use and Fan Creativity
Once upon a time, on a dark and stormy night, a creative fic with lovely illustrations and a trailer set to a dazzling song was beset upon by a massive, six headed dragon, bellowing fires about infringement, crimes and evil theft! Luckily, the clever fic, brave illustrations and strong vid - and their friend, MegaMeta - knew about the protective shields of transformative use, fair use, and the First Amendment! Hear their story at this panel, featuring Lev Grossman, Fred Von Lohmann, Aaron Schwabach and Julie Cromer-Young - moderated by Heidi Tandy.
11:30 - 12:30
Creativity Is Magic - Harry Potter products, trips, exhibits and amusement parks
We'll look at products and services inspired by the Potter-verse, including the 20Q, dolls and action figures, the Chicago exhibition, fan trips and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando with some of their creators and innovators. Panelists include Elizabeth Bland, Denise Van Patten, Leslie Combemale, Tanis Solar, Robin Burgener, Jeannie Barresi - moderated by Monique Trottier.
12:30 - 1:30
MPA Luncheon at ZEUM
No additional tickets can be purchased; only MPA registrants can attend.
Breakout Sessions- Choose One Per Hour
|
Wow! One of those sessions looks amazing, but I don't know if I want to attend the whole day. Can I go to just one session?
If you have a Full Registration, a No-Feasts Weekend Pass, a Vendor Pass or a Merlin's Circle registration, you can attend the MPA session of your choice (taking Fire Marshall limitations into consideration). Those who hold a Monday registration cannot attend MPA programming without upgrading to the MPA ticket.
Can I go to two sessions if I don't have an MPA registration?
No, to make it fair to everyone, we must limit non-MPA attendence. However, you can upgrade to an MPA registration for $100 for Full and Weekend-Pass Registrations, or for $75 if you have a Merlin's Circle registration. Don't forget - the MPA registration comes with admission to the Monday morning breakfast at the Parc55, lunch at ZEUM and a cocktail reception at the end of the day.
Can I see the map from the Parc55 to ZEUM?
Sure!
